An invitation: Join Us in the 90 Day Remnant Rebirth

A Little History

About 40 days ago, Lindon and I started the 40-Day Missionary Fast. We got the idea from something my brother Mel posted on Facebook. I sent it to Lindon, he loved the idea and so we began a 40 day fast. The results have been wonderful.

But as we are drawing to an end I came across this quote from the Gordon B. Hinckley, in the Presidents of the Church book:

The challenge which faces every member of this Church is to take the next step, to accept that responsibility to which he is called, even though he does not feel equal to it, and to do so in faith with the full expectation that the Lord will light the way before him.

The words “next step” have been my constant prayer since I first read those words. What is my “next step?”

to take the next step, to accept that responsibility to which he is called

I wrote a letter to Lindon asking him what he thought our “next step” should be. We discussed it over the phone and thought it would be a good idea to just do another 40 day fast. But for some reason the Spirit was telling me that just wasn’t enough.

As I was pondering what I learned from the current 40 day fast, I felt that just a fast, as good as it was, lacked some elements the Spirit was teaching me needed to be included. Out of those thoughts coupled with the Mike Stroud lessons about the Remnant, the Atonement: the Law of the Celestial Kingdom, and the Tip of the Spear arose the inspired idea of the 90 Day Remnant Reboot.

I immediately wrote a letter to Lindon introducing him to the idea of a 90 Day Remnant Reboot. I was excited with the possibilities.

But the Spirit wasn’t done teaching me, the evolution to my learning wasn’t over.

I have been reading from a book written by John Pontius called “Following the Light of Christ Into His Presence.” It’s a wonderful book about personal revelation. Just last night the perfect timing of the Lord happened once again as I read the following:

Instead of trying to repent by attacking individual actions alone, let us amplify our efforts by first yielding to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.  More than just guidance in how to overcome individual actions, his presence changes are nature so that we acquire the strength, power, and an obedient spirit sufficient to overcome them all. His companionship eventually causes the very desire for sin, to be purged from our soul.

Ask what your next step should be, then, be quiet and listen. (John Pontius, Following the Light of Christ Into His Presence)

There is was again, “next step.” And the spirit was answering my prayers with what I was reading.

The very next thing I read blew me away. It was exactly what the spirit had been leading me (and Lindon, and perhaps you) to this entire week:

In our preparations for the rebirth…

“That’s it! That’s the “next step” for me and Lindon!” I cried in prayer, with gratitude for yet again the Lord’s perfect timing playing out in my life. So right there I decided it would be called “The 90 Day Remnant Rebirth.”

What is the 90 Day Remnant Rebirth?

28 ¶And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.

32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. (Joel 2:28-32, emphasis added)

The Lord is calling His Remnant. They are awakening to the call.

There is an awakening happening, and there most certainly is an outpouring of the Spirit. The Lord is calling His Remnant. They are awakening to the call.

Those who have started to heed the call recognize in themselves a spiritual desire to lengthen their stride, and quicken their pace in living more righteously and more diligently keeping their covenants. It’s a striving towards being purged from sin through the Atonement of Christ, baptized by fire and of the Holy Ghost to prepare us to become citizens of Zion.

The 90 Day Remnant Rebirth is just a way to gamify the awakening in such a way that we support each other and help each other to heed the call we hear in our hearts.

What are the differences between the 90 Day Remnant Rebirth and the 40-Day Missionary Fast?

The first blaring difference is that one is only 40 days and the other is 90 days, and if you are really gung-ho read below for about the Conference to Conference Remnant Rebirth. Truthfully, 40 days was just a start. I was just starting to see the blessings, but I really don’t feel they are crystallized into habits quite yet. 90 days I feel is a much better length of time for such a challenge.

The 40-Day Missionary Fast was just a fast.

“Go home and fast for a day. In the attitude of fasting and prayer, make a list of every behavior that pokes at your spirit. Once you have made your list, then go to the Lord. Covenant with the Lord that you will fast from the things on that list for 40 days. In other words, for 40 days, you will do nothing that appears on that list.” (The 40-Day Missionary Fast)

Like I said, having done the 40-Day Missionary Fast I realized there were things all along that the Spirit was prompting me to do, not just eliminate, so the 90 Day Remnant Rebirth has an additional element which is things that you will add to your list, things that you will do.

The Fast List

This is a list of things that for 90 days you will cut out of your life, things you won’t do, things you will stop; basically, for 90 days you will do nothing that appears on the fast list.

The Add List

This is the list of things that for 90 day you will add to your life. These things could be things like pray every day, or read the Book of Mormon every day, or exercise every day; basically, for 90 days you will do the things that are on the add list.

Not One-Size-Fits-All

The 90 Day Remnant Rebirth is not a one-size-fits-all program, meaning what’s on my lists may not be on your lists, and what’s on your lists may not be on anyone else’s lists. The Spirit may tell you that you need to work on things that are more temporal in nature, where the Spirit may tell me to work on things more spiritual in nature, while someone else may have a mixture of both.

At the Speed of the Spirit

How intense your 90 Day Remnant Rebirth turns out to be is completely dependent upon you and the Holy Spirit.  This is where you get to listen to the Holy Spirit for guidance and direction for you alone.

This grasping of the rod of iron, which is personal Revelation, has everything to do with abandoning your sins, but may not initially address any specific sin. What this means is, the Holy Spirit may lead you through some preparatory work before actually directing you through repentance. It may, in fact, begin with a prompting to say your prayers, or read the Scriptures, or go to church, or to actually stub out a cigarette, or to go talk to the Bishop. But, whatever it is the Lord wants you to do, to obey will be the most important decision you will ever make – for upon that decision hinges the rest of eternity. That is, until the next prompting comes, and then that one will be the most important, and so, as you walk by faith with your fingers wrapped firmly around the rod of iron of personal Revelation. (John Pontius, Following the Light of Christ into His Presence)

The key is to obey what the Holy Spirit tells you. Your Heavenly Father knows what’s best for you right now. He knows you are ready to take that “next step” in your life. He’s been preparing you. Now all you have to do is obey the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Listen to the voice of the Lord and he will direct you. When you are totally obedient to the will of God, you are totally obedient.

…Again, the way to perfection is not through the disciplining and reshaping of the soul by the will of man, but through the discipline of obedience, and reshaping the soul by God. (John Pontius, Following the Light of Christ into His Presence)

And that is just what the 90 Day Remnant Rebirth is all about, the reshaping of our souls.

The Basic Rules

As you can already determine there’s really not a rigid set of guidelines that dictate how you do the 90 Day Remnant Rebirth, but there are a few suggestions that may help you to be more successful.

ask the Lord to reveal to you the things you need to work on

Start with a sincere fast and prayer. Ask the Lord to reveal to you the things you need to work on. Ask with real intent. Have a paper and pen handy, and write the two lists as you feel inspired: One list is your Fast List, and the other list is your Add List.

Then start. I also suggest you tell others about your 90 Day Remnant Rebirth. You don’t have to tell them everything on your list, some items may be very personal to you. But the more people you share this with the more support you will have, and the easier it will be for you to stay on track.

Stretch yourself. I could very easily fast from guacamole for 90 days, heck I’ve fasted from guacamole my entire life, not much of a stretch there. But if the spirit were to tell me to fast from Drumsticks, that would be an entirely different thing, and a real challenge indeed.

That’s a temporal example, let me tell you one that I did during my 40 Day Missionary Fast. I wasn’t content to just fast, so I was inspired to add a few things. I was prompted to write Lindon every day for the entire 40 days.  So I wrote Lindon a letter a day. That wasn’t always easy, but it stretched me and some of the letters I wrote turned out to be pure inspiration. They will be cherished letters for generations to come that hadn’t I made the commitment we wouldn’t have them. I’m grateful it stretched me. I’m better because of it, and Lindon I believe benefited from those letters as well.

So don’t make your list too easy, make them stretch you. But also, don’t make them so hard that you struggle and fail. You want to succeed. Maybe break the bigger audacious items into 3 parts – first 30 day, second 30 days, and third 30 days. Be creative. Remember this is your 90 Day Remnant Rebirth.

A BIG Warning

Whenever Lindon and I have started something like this in earnest, almost immediately the forces of evil rally together to unleash hell upon us. And believe me, that’s not an exaggeration either! Hell breaks loose when you set out to do something righteous. Be prepared for it.

In John Pontius’ book, “Following the Light of Christ into His Presence” he discusses a law that you might not be familiar with, which completely relates to what I am trying to warn you about.

Opposition is always equal and opposite to every spiritual blessing. In other words, when we receive a blessing, shortly thereafter, the evil one will be allowed equal opportunity and equal power to oppose the blessing. In practical terms, what happens is that we experience a burst of spiritual growth, and shortly thereafter, we experience the divinely-decreed opposition. We experience a powerful onslaught of doubt, temptation, lies, and trials, and without the spiritual refinements typical of those spiritually reborn, we sink spiritually, until we are in such pain that we cry out for help.

This principle of equal opposition is much more profound than most people allow. It is this fact, which is been the downfall of all the noticeable failures from Cain to King Saul to Judas to Sidney Rigdon. It is difficult to imagine Satan being allowed equal and opposite power to a heavenly manifestation, such as a glorious appearance of Jesus Christ. (John Pontius, Following the Light of Christ into His Presence)

If we stay the course, and stay strong in our resolve, we will be blessed with the strength and courage to stay on track.

The temptation and lies still burst forth like a vile volcano, but we will be prepared by the Lord to resist them. The spiritual ups and downs cease to be so dramatic. The opposition is powerful, and does cause us to labor diligently to rise above it, but with the voice of revelation speaking sweetly in our hearts, we need not succumb to, nor be defeated by it. (ibid.)

You might be saying to yourself, then why try, why put myself through this 90 Day Remnant Rebirth only to be challenged by the adversary? And my answer is simply this:  no great accomplishment was ever won easily. The harder you work the greater your reward.

Opposition should not deter someone from plotting a course of spiritual growth. Because the blessings we received while righteously overcoming trials are immensely compensating for the trials of opposition. (ibid.)

The Super Challenge

You’ve heard it said that after General Conference we should make what we learned in Conference our walk and talk for the next 6 months. If you’ve heard the call from the Holy Spirit you may want to super-charge your 90 Day Remnant Rebirth and do it twice in a row, back to back. Let’s call that the Conference to Conference Remnant Rebirth.

Remnant:  it is time to awaken, and time to take the next steps. Let me remind you:

The challenge which faces every member of this Church is to take the next step, to accept that responsibility to which he is called, even though he does not feel equal to it, and to do so in faith with the full expectation that the Lord will light the way before him.

I know you do not feel equal to the task, but I promise you the Lord is there to light the way before you. Go forward with faith, one step at a time.

And, please let Lindon and I know by commenting below you are going to join us in the very first 90 Day Remnant Rebirth, we’d love to support you, and encourage you along the way. AND, if you have been led to this by the Holy Spirit, invite others you know to join us too. Let’s awaken the Remnant!

Without a doubt the most important thing I have ever learned in life is that no matter what you can't stop breathing.

  1. I am truly inspired and have been experiencing some of the opposition in my dreams and my daily life. I do not welcome the opposition and I DO NOT want it to be a part of my life ever again. I will take this opportunity to join you in this remnant rebirth and I look good forward to positive changes it will bring. I want more Hope and the inspired expectations it hosts. Thank you Mike and Lindon for sharing this path.
